History

Steam harbour tug
built in Britain during WW II
as the Empire Jane,
and brought
to NZ in 1947 for use at Wellington.
There is an unverified
story that she participated in the Normandy
landings of 1944. Owned
by Union Steamship Co., sold to British
Petroleum (NZ) Ltd. in 1975. Operated in
Wellington harbour for 30 years until laid
up in December 1977. Preserved on shore
in Tauranga Historic Village from July 1978.
Scuttled as an artificial reef on 19 March
2000 off Motiti Island, Mount Maunganui,
in 37-39 S, 176-25 E.
